Inside Out

Materese Roche and Alla Podolsky
March 9 to April 1, 2012
Opening Reception: Saturday, March 10, 4–8 pm
Materese Roche presents a series of expansive sky paintings which are inspired by the compositions and classical techniques of the past. However, she infuses her paintings passages of painterly abstraction, and takes some liberty with color and proportions, which emphasize her kinesthetic and sensory approach to painting. As a result, the paintings are visceral, fresh. Freeing the subject of landscape from very literal interpretation allows viewers emotional and visual space to engage in the work on an intimate and personal level while offering a sense of security, through the familiarity of the subject.

Alla Podolsky's psychological and narrative paintings, in contrast, show people in their environments, often in a city or town setting Her vibrant work portrays the traces people leave on their surroundings – focusing on the human impressions in nature and things. Alla's canvases, many incorporating mirrors reflecting the outside/in, or the solitary person at a window looking out onto the world, expertly depict her singular artistic vision and amplify the theme of this exhibit.
