It started with a casual conversation. A painter and a paper-works artist started talking about their work. Then, in a moment, it was an exchange of philosophies and inspirations. As is so often the case, one thing leads to another, and the artists decided to do a show together.
"One Thing Leads to Another" by painter Carol Sanzalone of Lambertville and paper-work artist Jennifer Cadoff of Princeton will be on display at Artists' Gallery in Lambertville, March 11th through April 3rd.
Although their work may look very different, the artists share similarities in both process and intention.
"Both Carol and Jennifer are often inspired to start new work by something in the natural world - a flowing river or stand of trees at the edge of a field, for example," says gallery spokesperson Laurie Nicholson. "Both are also interested in inviting the viewer into the process of determining what the work is about."
Cadoff, who works with ink on paper and with paper itself in dimensional work, explains: "I love to stand back and listen to people talk about my work," she says. "They always see things that I never thought of while I was creating the piece. Sometimes their ideas even inspire me to create new work."
Sanzalone, who paints with watercolor and acrylic on both paper and canvas, agrees. "In my experimental work, I like it when people are not sure what my paintings represent. In fact, when I begin a painting, I don't always know where it's going. As I work, I will step back, pause, and wait for the emerging piece to tell me where it wants to go. I find this intuitive collaboration with the work very satisfying."
The opening for "One Thing Leads to Another" will be held Saturday, March 12th, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Artists' Gallery. The artists will also host a closing reception on Sunday, April 3rd, from 2 to 4 p.m.
