Harvey is a self-taught pastel artist with many years of experience in producing beautiful landscapes, cityscapes and seascapes. He has won a multitude of awards within the pastel community. He is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America and a Distinguished Member of the Pastel Society of New Jersey.

Harvey’s inspiration comes from what Mother Nature provides him. He transforms what he sees onto paper. Sketching out a pastel painting first is like a rehearsal. It helps me to understand the paintings in’s and out’s and then prepares me for the next step…the painting. He applies many layers of pastel to get the right value and composition. Working with pastels encourages him to think about the wonderful array of different pure pigment color possibilities available to him.

He brings forth the many patterns of light, shadow and color that are available from the scenes that he interprets. It takes time to adjust and develop a style and technique. He calls that style photo-realism.

In 2024, Harvey was selected for the Pastel Society of America’s 52nd Annual Exhibition, with his work later chosen for a six-month exhibition at the Butler Institute of American Art in 2025.
